Week 2&3 Planning for the Phantasmagoria Show

Throughout these two weeks, we were assigned our groups which we will be working with to create our Phnatasmagoria light shows. My group consists of seven people: Tereza, Amirreza, Danil and I (from art) and Dina, Avantika and Magnus (from music). Firstly we shared our English stories and ballads and decided what the main plot is going and all the surprises/ 'booms' that are going to happen in our story. These are some of the ideas that we came up with:

  • The story is set in a school
  • The story is based in a realistic and normal place
  • We didn't want to have any fantasy and not real characters so the story would be more believable
  • We chose to only have two characters (having very little characters can help the story be more scary because all the attention is on one character)
  • The story takes place at night which already puts the audience in an uncomfortable position

In these two weeks we also created a Blendspace account where we are going to post pictures, examples and sneak peaks of what we are creating. We have also have come up with our company name which is called 'Screams and Whispers', we decided that we wanted to call ourselves that because we like the bitter-sweet, what I mean by that it the word 'scream' and the word 'whisper' are two opposite things that you wouldn't do together, also those two words are negative word which would be used to describe something scary (Phantasmagoria Shows are meant to be scary shows).

In addition to coming up with the plot of our story, my job was to actually write the story and add all of our ideas into one piece. So instead of simply writing it, when I had finished writing it, I asked my English teacher (Miss Kantretti) if she could take a few minutes and mark it and give me feedback to improve the story and make it even more scarier (that has helped us a lot). Now the only thing that we have to do with story is turn it into a script so the narrator knows what to say and each individual character knows when and what to say. Lastly before getting separated into Music and Art we came up with the sound effects and downloaded some apps that could help the Music group re-create some of the scary things using musical instruments.
Here are some pictures of us working in the lessons;

Introduction to Phantasmagoria Light Show

Reflection on PowerPoint

When creating this PowerPoint, I learned more about Phantasmagoria Shows and how the Magic Lantern works and expanded my knowledge even more. I learnt how art and music are both equally important in creating a successful scary and full of suspense and tension Phantasmagoria Show, also I learnt  the tricks of how the creator of the shows used the magic lantern and the glass they used. How the hand painted slides then turned into photographic slides with the developing years. On top of that I learnt more about the Phantasmagoria Shows and Magic Lantern shows and it turned out that there was a difference between the two which I didn't know before. I got to use the knowledge from Ms. Turner's previous classes about the roller coaster and tension and use it while creating the PowerPoint.

My English horror stories and ballad will certainly help me when creating my own Phantasmagoria Show with my group  because I could inspiration on parts of the narratives and use the parts where I built tension and transform that in tension for the show. I could use my story as a basis or a starter point and then add parts and section of my other team mates' stories which I find interesting and from there build on and use our creativity to create a scary 21st Century Phantasmagoria Light Show. I learnt that tension can be built in a written from using onomatopoeia and powerful words such as 'death', 'ghosts', 'evil' etc. using words like these, it can have a major impact instead of using words like scary and bad. Also tension can  be built in a visual form by continuous showing pictures that are related to something scary which will cause the audience to think that something scary is about to happen or that there will be an obstacle in the story/ ballad. Always using dark colours can show and transmit and dark and deathly mood to the audience which will again cause them to feel scared and more conscious that something bad is about to happen.

Lastly tension can be built in a musical form by using percussion instruments as said in the PowerPoint because the music doesn't necessarily have to be loud to create and spooky and creepy feeling, for example using a violin and creating a very soft melody in the background can have a huge effect on the whole show and build tension. Another point is starting the music at a very low volume and gradually get higher and finish with a loud bang will have the audience always at the edge of their seat, on the other hand you dont only have to look at music for the instrument section, also using sound effects like screams, loud bangs, whispering etc. can build tension.Overall I enjoyed creating this PowerPoint because it helped me gain a lot of knowledge about Phantasmagoria Light Shows and it also made me use my creativity when I had to come up with ideas for our personal Phantasmagoria light show. It got me thinking of what I actually wanted to create and what I wanted people to feel. I have understood how I can use art when creating my show and the type of colours which would make my audience feel uncomfortable and at the edge of their seat.
